Week 3 - Community Service Project

Update on Community Service Project: During class we established that the first topic we will present for our community service project is behavioral health. We outlined topics within behavioral health we may discuss such as its definition, removing taboos of behavioral health, the implication of cultural differences in behavioral health, case studies of patients with behavioral health issues, demographics/statistics of those with high risk of struggling with behavioral health issues, symptoms of poor behavioral health, and care and treatment (medical, alternative treatment, counseling, and support groups) for patients with behavioral health issues. We established that flyers will need to be made alongside brochures to be handed out before our presentation. Furthermore, eventually we will have to discuss which groups will be doing research of the topic, presenting the topic, creating the brochures, or creating the flyers. It seems we will be working on each major topic as an entire...

Cell Journal 2 - Dictionary

Terms: CRISPR  Peptidylprolyl isomerase PDI (protein disulfide isomerase) & Ero1 (ER oxidoreductin 1)  CRISPR - Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeats; Repeating DNA sequences in bacteria are interrupted by short sequences of DNA, which are fragments of viral DNA the result of viral replication using a bacterial host. Cas9--an enzyme often referred to as "molecular scissors"--locates the corresponding viral DNA (via an RNA guide), cleaves the viral DNA, thus destroying the virus. Gene editing becomes possible by synthesizing a synthetic RNA guide to lead Cas9 to a desired sequence of a (mutated) gene and being replaced instead by a normal gene.  https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/e6/c0/33/e6c033bc17f6f46149ad1ec33580542b.jpg Peptidylprolyl Isomerase - A chaperone enzyme that converts trans peptide bonds (which are more stable due to the lack of steric hinderance) to cis peptide bonds by inserting the amino acid proline ...

Cell Journal 1 - WAH Community Health Needs Assessment

Four Diseases   Chosen in Class Cancer  Health Literacy Behavioral Health Maternal and Child Health We chose these diseases based on their relevance to the community according to WAH's Community Health Needs Assessment. Although we feared being redundant by sharing information about breast cancer--which is a common topic discussed--it is beneficial to reiterate and emphasize information in order for it to have considerable impact. Breast cancer, for example, continues to be on the rise within the community and therefore should be regarded by the community as an important issue. We may discuss why certain forms of cancer are rising within the community (which also includes thyroid cancer), risk factors, prevention, and treatment for such diseases. Health literacy will be extremely beneficial to discuss as Ashley mentioned during class, patients do not know what kinds of questions they should be asking in a medical setting and is therefore the prerogative of the heal...
